Why did the staff choose to come to Syracuse?

The AWESOME staff here in Lawrinson Hall comes from all over the place- from Africa and Hawaii, to Nebraska and cities all over New York State. So to get everyone started with getting to know us a little better, we're going to have weekly Q&A's that give you a little insight into why this staff is better than all the others on campus!

When I was in high school the only things I ever knew about myself were that I loved to write, I loved imagery, and I loved a challenge. Years later I arrived at Syracuse and am pursuing my dream of being a documentary film and history major. Syracuse was never my "dream" school when I was growing up, but after visiting the campus, being accepted, and seeing all of the opportunities that exist here, I realized no matter what dream I may have for the future, at SU I could achieve them. I have awesome professors, great classes, and advisors who are willing to answer all of my questions (and I do have plenty). Years ago I couldn't see myself anywhere, now, I can't imagine my life if I hadn't chosen SU, if I hadn't become an RA, and if I had never met the people here who have quickly gone from friends to family. It's so super corny, but, I'm super corny anyway. =)

Since I was about 8-years-old, I knew I wanted to go into journalism. When I came to Syracuse for a high school choir trip in 11th grade, I knew I belonged here the second I stepped foot on campus.
Then when I found out it has the #1 communications program in the country...I was done looking.

I applied Early Decision to Syracuse. It was the only school I applied to.

After taking 2 Film classes last year, my life was flipped upside down and I realized that my true passion is for Television and Film.
I am now a proud TRF major. wootwoot. =)

I've wanted to be a teacher since elementary school. I loved the idea of helping kids to learn about new things. In high school, I realized I also loved biology and decided to combine the 2 topics and become a biology teacher. I visited Syracuse simply because it was close to home and my guidance counselor was bugging me about starting college tours, but once I went on my tour I realized this is where I wanted to be. Syracuse just has so many resources to offer in every realm of student life. Once I found out about the great teacher education program that gets you into classrooms your very first year, I was absolutely sold on coming here.

I actually applied to Syracuse for a variety of really logical reasons. First of all, my dad works here, so I don't have to pay tuition. Second of all, my sister went here (she's 12 years older than me) and would always invite me to spend the night in her room at Shaw. Third of all, it's close enough that I can easily see my family, but just prestigious enough that only a few people from my high school went here - and I never see them on campus anyways, so it's cool.

I never really knew how prestigious this school was, or how welcoming the psychology department would be. I also never realized how diverse it was or how many awesome friends I would make. It's the perfect fit for me, and I think that would still be the case even if I didn't have a list of logical reasons to go here. I've come to realize that I am a very lucky person because of this.

Syracuse wasn't my initial first choice. It actually wasn't even the first college I went to. In fact, I didn't even apply to SU as a senior in high school

What the heck am I doing here then? Well, my freshman year was spent at Drexel University. I realized that it was just not right for me but out of that experience I found what I wanted in an undergraduate college. I wanted a good looking campus (Drexel is ranked the ugliest university in the nation), I wanted strong psychology programs (It's my main major), and I wanted to go somewhere that I'd get a really good education. Since I live about 45 minutes from Syracuse, I applied early on in my freshman year because I found it to have all three of these things. I got in and I've loved almost every day here...almost.

I'm American, but grew up in Spain. So come college I knew I wanted to come to an American school. I found a couple of colleges that semed interesting enough and that met my criteria for "engineering" through the collegeboard.com college matchmaker. I applied to a couple of schools in the Boston area and that was that.
I didn't even know about Syracuse until after the application deadline had passed. I emailed SU just because it did look like a cool-enough college and they accepted my late application, they gave me the best financial package ...and I was sold. I visited the campus for the first time when I moved in for orientation.

I HAD (past tense is important here) this goal. To become a big time magazine editor, live in NYC, be able to get free stuff from the magazine, and take super nice vacations. So I applied to Syracuse solely for the Newhouse School! I got in, declared a magazine journalism major..and that was that. Fast forward between my senior year and my 2nd semester of college. One day I had to do random interviews for my news writing class. I grumbled and complained in between each and every interview. And my friend said, "Imani, won't you have to do this kind of thing for like the rest of your life?" And I realized...SNAP, I have to get out of this major. So I did just that. I'm now a public relations major, and want to do something COMPLETELY different besides my goals I listed above. :)

I was looking for a school in NYS, but far enough from home. Syracuse is in NYS, and more than 4 hours from NYC. I was looking for a school full of awesome people and fun. Syracuse is full of awesome people and fun. I was looking for love. Syracuse is full of love...

Plus, they offered me a legitimate financial package. Its cold as hell. Love it all!!!
